The Emergency Info BC Social Media Unit is actively online Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 17:00, and afterhours during a Level 2 (partial) or 3 (full-scale) provincial activation. Please note that during a Level 2 or 3 provincial emergency, the Social Media Unit will only provide verified information as it is received, and that community-specific queries should be directed to the appropriate local authority in charge of local emergency plans and response activities.
Earthquake and Tsunami Notification Methods
The criteria that trigger a notification and consequent methods of notifying the public, local authorities, first responders and major provincial media about a potential tsunami on B.C.'s coast is available here.
If you would like to receive West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center tsunami alert notifications via email or text, please sign up here.
If you are on Twitter, the US National Weather Service also sends out automated tsunami notifications on its Twitter account, @NWS_WCATWC. Text "follow NWS_WCATWC" to 21212 to receive SMS alerts on your mobile phone.
Natural Resources Canada and the U.S. Geographical Survey send automated earthquake notifications on their Twitter accounts, @CANADAquakes and @USGSted. Text "follow CANADAquakes" or "follow USGSted" to 21212.
You can sign up to receive information from @EmergencyInfoBC by texting "follow emergencyinfobc" to the same number. Please note you will receive notification of all alerts sent out from the @EmergencyInfoBC Twitter feed.
